When
Talebans came into power in Kabul, on 27th of September 1996,
the areas under their control, were governed in accordance with
ultrafundamentalistic codes of behaviour, wich were enforced by
virtue of edicts enacted in accordance with the judgement of Taleban
religious leaders, from Kandahar. Afghan citizens not sharing
the Talebans' line of conduct, considered these rules as unbearably
oppressive. In that period, in Afghanistan there was a large number
of encroachment on human rights, but the women were the main butt
of Talebans. In the past, the Afghan women, especially those who
lived in the main cities, partecipated in public life, studied,
practised their profession, were elected. Since 1996, they have
been excluded from the work and the learning; they have been constrained
to wear the burqa, that hide their body and their face, so with
their freedom they have lost also their identity.
The International Women Association for Communication "MEDiterranean
MEDIA", on November 1998, began an awakening campaign to
stir international public opinion about the problem of the rights
denied Afghan women.
The Association has organized, in cooperation with AIDOS and Médecins
du Monde, a photographic exhibition "Sveliamo le donne afgane";
it has also carried out a multimedia CD-ROM including the pictures
of the exhibition, Talebans'ordinances, many documents of Revolutionary
Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), a documentary
edited by Emergency, many video edited by the staff of Mediterraneo
and RAI 3, many texts written by women about the veil and the
body, musics and audio pieces.
The CD-ROM shows that women couldn't go out alone and couldn't
talk in public; without right to socialize or to participate in
the active life, the depression was, and unfortunately is, a very
widespread illness among the Afghan women. The girls, in the past
numerous in the schools and in the universities, were excluded
from them for a long period. It was difficult for the women also
to benefit from the medical facilitiesbecause of the difficulty
to apply Talebans'ordinances (separate wards, women staff, etc.).
The CD-ROM shows that the burqa in Afghanistan, the veil in Middle
East, the infibulation in central Africa, the bandages on the
feet of the Chinese little girl, the control on the motherhood
in the West are, all of them, coercive practices to check the
women body.
The Association, through the CD-ROM, wants to promote in the schools
the comparison starting from the veil to arrive to the valorization
of the difference of gender and to multiculturalism.
It is necessary to promote campaign for the freedom of the Afghan
women; it isn't only an abstract problem of human rights, it is
still a matter of life and death: Afghan women need of medical
assistance and food that they couldn't obtain by themselves because
they have to win back the right to earn a living. It's important
to relight the reflectors on their reality.
