The United Nations and the Advancement of Women, 19451996
The United Nations Blue Books Series, Volume VI, revised edition
Throughout its first half century, the United Nations has served as
a catalyst for the global advancement of women. Working to promote the
principles of gender equality and nondiscrimination enshrined in the Organization's
Charter, the United Nations has been instrumental in promoting recognition
of women's fundamental human rights, in codifying those rights in legally
binding international agreements, and in fostering greater understanding
of the central role played by women in peace-building and in economic and
social development. The United Nations and the Advancement of Women,
19451996 includes more than 130 United Nations documents relating to
women's rights, and chronicles the evolution of a campaign in which the
initial focus on political and family life has expanded and now encompasses
urgent issues such as poverty, violence against women and equal access
to education, employment and health care. This edition is revised and updated
to include the outcome of the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, the
largest conference in the history of the United Nations. Complementing
the documents are an extensive introduction by Secretary-General Boutros
BoutrosGhali and detailed chronologies. The documents include:
The landmark 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
against Women;
International conventions and declarations on the political rights of women
and the nationality of married women;
Action plans, declarations and resolutions adopted at the cycle of world
conferences on women beginning in Mexico City in 1975 and including the
1995 Beijing Conference;
Resolutions of the General Assembly and of the Economic and Social Council;
United Nations surveys and statistics on the status of women worldwide.
